Best Places to View a Rocket Launch in Lompoc
Lompoc is just minutes from some of the most spectacular rocket launches on California’s Central Coast. Vandenberg Space Force Base—the West Coast’s primary spaceport—is nearby, making our valley one of the best places to view launches. Rockets lift off from several designated Space Launch Complex sites (SLCs).
Since Vandenberg is an active military base, public access is restricted. Only military personnel can view launches from within the base. But don’t worry—we’ve rounded up several top spots where you can catch the action from a distance.

Top Rocket Viewing Spots Around Lompoc
1. Surf Beach
On clear days, Surf Beach is a great place to watch rocket launches—if it’s open and not closed for security reasons. Bring snacks, a blanket, and make sure your phone is charged so you can capture this unforgettable coastal launch experience. The nearby Surf Amtrak Station also offers a solid vantage point for viewing. It’s a quieter option with easy access and oceanfront views.
2. West Ocean Avenue
Just minutes from downtown Lompoc, West Ocean Avenue has multiple intersections that provide solid views—weather permitting. Park with caution along the roadway and stay clear of traffic. Good vantage points include:
- 13th Street & Arguello Blvd.
- Renwick Avenue
- Floradale Avenue & Ocean Avenue
3. Santa Lucia Canyon Road & Victory Road
This rural corner offers views of SLC-3 and SLC-4 and a partial look at the launchpad. It’s also one of the best spots for hearing the sonic boom. Note: There are no restrooms, food vendors, or accessible facilities here, and parking is extremely limited.
4. Ocean Park
Though the launchpad isn’t visible from this spot, Ocean Park is still a great place to feel the rumble and see the rocket in flight—only about four miles from the launch site. The area features a playground and birdwatching opportunities, but keep in mind:
- Parking is limited and the road will close once it’s full.
- The park closes at sunset, so time your visit accordingly.
5. Allan Hancock College
Roughly nine miles from the launch site, Allan Hancock College offers a partial view of the launch pad and a clear view of the rocket’s nose cone as it lifts off. It’s a convenient spot, but parking may be limited during class hours.
6. Riverbend Park
Just down the road from Allan Hancock College, Riverbend Park provides open space and flexibility. While the launch pad itself isn’t visible, it’s still a good location to see the rocket’s ascent. If a launch is delayed or scrubbed, enjoy the park’s large open fields or take a walk. Be aware: The park features eight full-size soccer fields and can be very busy on weekends, which affects parking availability.
Currently Closed Viewing Locations
The following areas are closed to the public and not currently available for launch viewing:
- Top of Harris Grade Road
- Hawk’s Nest (Camellia Ln./Azalea Ln.)
- Marshallia Ranch Road
- Highway 246
